Food Attempts

As a college student I must make food in a short amount of time. This is mostly for my tracking but can be a helpful source for others.

Check out some quick recipes that have worked for me!

Lemon Rasam + Sadam

Ready to eat Lemon Rasam Sadam in < 20 min.

Tools Needed: Instant Pot (or Pressure Cooker)

    Note: you can parallelize Process A and B as desired

    Process A: Make Rice
  1. Add 1:2 Payatham Paruppu:Rice ratio into Instant Pot vessel. Recommend 2/3 cup rice for 1 person.
  2. Add however much peanut (Spanish Peanuts) you desire to the rice. I usually put a handful.
  3. Wash the mixture of Rice, Paruppu, and Peanut to remove excess starch. Note that the peanuts assist with draining nicely.
  4. Add 1:2.5 mixture:water ratio to instant pot vessel.
  5. Add salt and jeera. If added 2.5 cups water, then recommend 0.25 spoon salt and 0.5 tsp jeera.
  6. wait until Process B finished
  7. Add Process B to mixture.
  8. Put Instant Pot on Rice Setting, wait until done.

  9. Process B: Kadagu + Chili
  10. Heat Kadagu for 30 sec
  11. cut 1/3-2/3 chili into 2 pc and heat w Kadagu
  12. continue heating until chili warm and kadagu jumping

Sambar (2 servings)

Easy Sambar instructions. I would cook for multiple servings bc this takes a while.

Tools Needed: Instant Pot (or Pressure Cooker) for dal, other vessel for sambar

    Note: Suggested to be on last step of A before or at same time as starting B. Also, scale proportions if needed.

    Process A: Make dal (instant pot)
  1. 1 cup flat toor dal.
  2. 1:2 cup water, 1/4 tumeric, 1/4 salt.
  3. Pressure Cook on High, 12 min.

  4. Process B: Vegetables + Sambar concentrate
  5. Thalichu koti: kadugu + chili + oil (until kadugu is cooked)
  6. Note: the following 3 instructions must be done very soon after each other
  7. Add vegetables and stir. Oil should start cooking veggies.
  8. Add asofoetida, then 1 cup of water.
  9. Dissolve 1 spoon tamarind paste, 1 spoon sambar powder, 1/2 spoon salt.
  10. Wait until the mixture comes to a boil. Then, incrementally add paruppu and stir until consistency is correct.
  11. Allow mixture to come to a boil again. Begin taste testing. Add salt if needed.
